Best AI chatbot for Shopify stores in 2026: what to look for

Every Shopify store gets the same questions: do you ship to my country, how much, how long, what is the return policy, is this in stock, how do I track my order. A good AI chatbot answers those from your own store pages, around the clock, and hands anything else to you with the customer's email. A bad one guesses, charges per conversation and sits on top of your theme like a lead weight.

This guide is about how to choose. The short answer for most small and mid-sized stores: pick a widget that answers only from your content, shows the source, hands off honestly, and charges a flat price. SupportLime's Shopify guide shows the install if you want to skip ahead.

What a Shopify chatbot must do

Answer from your store, not from the internet. The model should be restricted to your product pages, policies and FAQ. Ask it something you have not written down and the right answer is "I don't know, let me pass this to the team", not a confident invention about your shipping times.

Show its source. A link to the policy page under the answer lets the customer read more and lets you see which page the bot relied on. If the page is wrong, you fix the page.

Hand off with context. When the bot cannot answer, it should collect the customer's email and send you the whole conversation. You should be able to reply from one inbox and have the customer see it in the widget or by email.

Stay out of your theme's way. One script tag, a tiny loader, the chat in an iframe. Your Lighthouse score should not move.

Be honest about orders. Order-status lookups need an app with API access to your store. Most widgets, including ours today, hand "where is my order" to you. Do not believe a vendor who says their bot resolves order problems unless it is a Shopify app with order read access.

The pricing traps

Per-conversation or per-resolution billing. Some tools bill every conversation the AI "resolves", including ones where the customer simply left. Your bill grows with traffic and you cannot predict it. Prefer a flat monthly allowance of AI replies.

Per-seat pricing. If your partner and a part-timer also answer chats, two extra seats can double the bill. Look for unlimited teammates.

Branding removal as an add-on. Removing "Powered by X" from the widget is a $17 to $99 a month line item at several vendors. It should be included in any paid plan.

Credits with multipliers. "One message costs 1 credit on the basic model and 20 on the advanced one" makes the allowance meaningless. One reply should be one reply.

What to test before you go live

Open the test chat and ask, in your own customers' words:

  1. "Do you ship to Canada?" (and your three biggest export markets)
  2. "What's your return policy?"
  3. "Is the [your best seller] in stock in medium?"
  4. "How do I track my order?"
  5. "Can I change my address after ordering?"
  6. "Do you have a discount code?"

For each answer check three things: is it correct, does it cite the right page, and when the content does not cover it, does it say so and offer to hand off. Then add the missing answers as Q&A pairs and test again. Twenty minutes here saves a month of wrong answers.

Installing on Shopify in five minutes

  1. Create an account and paste your store URL. The crawler reads product, collection, policy and FAQ pages.
  2. Test it (above).
  3. Copy the script tag from the dashboard.
  4. In Shopify admin: Online Store → Themes → Edit code → layout/theme.liquid, paste the tag just before </body>, save.

The launcher appears on every page. Add your shipping and returns policies as Q&A so the exact wording is used, and set "ask for email" to "on handoff" so customers are not blocked by a form before they can ask anything.

What we built, and what we did not

SupportLime does the list above: answers from your store with sources, honest handoff, shared inbox and tickets, unlimited teammates, flat pricing (free for one store and 100 replies a month, $29 for 1,500), no branding fee. It does not look up orders yet; that needs a Shopify app, which is on our roadmap. If order lookups are your main pain, a store-connected app is the right tool and we would rather say so than overpromise.
